Planed all round? Cut to size? Sawn board? Surely ordering timber is easy but what do these terms mean? Don’t worry we are here to help you order your timber and choose the correct finish for your project.
Planed Timber – Planed all round means that all the wood surfaces have been planed, in other words it has been brought to a uniform level. The finished look requires a smooth surface ready to be worked on or presented.

The common grades for planed timber:
- PAR – Planed all round (along both the edges and sides)
- PBS – Planed along both sides
- PSE – Planed on a single edge
Rough Sawn – This is when wood is cut to a basic size and the edges and sides are not smooth. This is usually the first stage of preparing wood for further projects it is unplaned and raw cut.
Benefits of rough sawn timber:
- Planed and sand the timber yourself
- Cut the timber to your dimensions
- Cost effective if you can prepare the wood yourself
Cut to Width – Often the wood supplies that are stocked in our warehouse can be a lot wider than the width of timber needed for the project you are undertaking. In some circumstances the timber can be double, the width of the wood required.
Cut to Length – You would select this option if you want your timber cross cut to length. If you do not select this option, then your timber requirement may be supplied longer than the length that you have requested.

- Made bespoke to you
- Cut to your required width / length

FAS Grade – This is the highest grade of hardwood timber, it is derived from the original grade ‘Firsts and Seconds’ and will provide the user with long, clear cuttings. FAS is available for American and West African hardwoods and some European Oak.
