3 Tips For Keeping Your Kids Safe When Playing Outside

Playing outside is incredibly beneficial for your children. However, the outdoors can also be full of potential dangers that could put your kids at risk. Luckily, there are things you can do to help your kids be able to play outside and experience the benefits without being put an unnecessary risk. To show you how this can be done, here are three tips for keeping your kids safe when playing outside.

Be Smart About The Sun

One of the biggest dangers that you need to be on the lookout for when spending time outside is the sun. Not only can kids easily get sunburned if they spend too much time in the sunlight without the proper protection, but your little ones can also easily become dehydrated and suffer from heat exhaustion or heat stroke. To combat this, Lisa Freedman, a contributor to, recommends that you always put on sunscreen before you let your kids play outside, that you protect their eyes with sunglasses, and that you avoid spending too much time outside when the sun’s ray are at their strongest, which is between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Enroll In Swimming Lessons

When playing outside, there’s always a chance that your kids could come upon some form of water. For young children, it’s possible for them to get in physical danger or even drown in just a few inches of water. Older children who don’t know their own abilities might think they can handle themselves in water only to discover that they can’t. So to help ensure that your kids don’t get hurt because of standing water, recommends that you teach your kids how to swim through enrolling them in swimming lessons. There are all types of swimming lessons available for kids of all ages, so find the one that best matches your kids and their needs in order to keep your kids safe around water.

Wear The Right Clothing

Children are often more susceptible to the environment around them, which can make them more vulnerable to exposure and the elements of the world they live in. Because of this, it’s vital that you ensure that your kids are dressed appropriately before they go outside to play. If it’s warm outside, make sure your kids are wearing breathable clothes that will help keep them cool and protected from the sun. When it’s cold, keep them warm with coats, hats, and gloves. And if your kids are ever going to be playing where there might be cars nearby, Dr. Kate M. Cronan, a contributor to, shares that you should have your kids wear bright or reflective clothing so they’re easily seen.

To help your kids stay safe when playing outside, consider implementing some of the tips mentioned above.
